BRONX - A driver high from smoking weed, who was speeding with a suspended license, fatally struck an elderly man on his way to prayer, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark announced.
Victor Ramos was charged in the death of 67-year-old Mohammed Rahman, who was struck and killed by a car in Castle Hill.
Ramos, 27, was charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, second and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
At around 9 pm on September 25, Ramos was driving his 1994 Infiniti on Turnbull Avenue. Prosecutors said Ramos was driving almost twice the speed limit when he approached the intersection of Castle Hill. At the time Rahman had the right of way and was crossing the street.
Family members said Rahman was walking from his home to go to prayer.
Prosecutors said Ramos’ car fatally struck Rahman.
Ramos remained on the scene and was found to be impaired by drugs. In the indictment Ramos admitted to “smoking a blunt before driving.”
“An elderly man on his way to pray at religious services was killed, allegedly by a driver impaired by marijuana and speeding through an intersection,” Clark said. “Negligent, reckless drivers who make our streets deadly will be held accountable.”
Ramos was also driving with a suspended license at the time.
Ramos will next appear in court on December 19.
An indictment is an accusatory instrument and not proof of a defendant’s guilt.
