Flooded Roads Create Traffic Nightmares

BRONX - Today’s heavy rains caused massive flooding throughout the Bronx leaving some drivers stranded.

Despite early reports of heavy rains could lead to potential flooding New Yorkers were caught flat footed in one of the worst cases of flooding since 2012’s Superstorm Sandy.

On Mosholu Parkway, a driver was stopped on the grassy median after being trapped in the rising waters.

The flooding left traffic backed up as drivers were forced to go around after flood waters closed off roads.

After Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for NY State, Mayor Eric Adams issued a similar decree for NYC

“If you are home, stay home, if you are at work, shelter in place for now,” Adams said.

Meanwhile Congressman Jamal Bowman issued the following statement to New Yorkers:

“My team is watching this situation closely and will work with local officials to identify resources that may be needed as a result of flooding,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman Ed.D (NY-16). “In the meantime, I hope that all impacted by the storm are able to remain safe in a safe, dry space until the rain passes. I urge everyone to avoid going outside and driving if possible. Today, 150 schools had to shelter in place and my kids had to be picked up early. This is a clear example of the climate, infrastructure, and childcare crises intersecting. In the face of these crises, we have to urgently build resilient infrastructure and prepare for a range of extreme weather events. Our roads, schools, and homes were not built to sustain the climate chaos we are now consistently experiencing. Storms should not devastate or wreak havoc on our communities and infrastructure. I’m going to fight like hell to get more federal aid to our communities and to safeguard them, including by working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. I urge local government officials to do everything they can to ensure a quick and comprehensive emergency response, and let’s mobilize our resources to put people to work to upgrade our infrastructure to rebuild America.”
